Sea Turtle Season is Here: Witness Hawksbill and Green Turtle Hatchings at Rosalie Bay

June 25, 2025

The Time of the Hawksbills and Greens

There’s something sacred about standing on a quiet beach at sunrise, the waves gently lapping at the shoreline, when suddenly—movement. Dozens of tiny hatchlings emerge from beneath the sand and instinctively race toward the ocean, their flippers working overtime to carry them toward a new life at sea. This is not just a beautiful sight; it’s a miracle of nature—and one you can witness firsthand at Rosalie Bay Eco Resort & Spa.

Every year, Rosalie Bay becomes a sanctuary for two incredible marine species: the critically endangered Hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) and the endangered Green turtle (Chelonia mydas). These majestic creatures return to our black sand beaches along Dominica’s southeastern coast to continue the ancient ritual of nesting—a journey of resilience, survival, and hope.

The Return of the Turtles

From March through October, Hawksbill and Green turtles return to the very beach where they were born, guided by instinct and nature’s unbreakable bond. Under the cover of darkness, the female turtles emerge from the sea, dragging their heavy shells ashore to dig deep nests in the sand. Each nest can contain upwards of 100 eggs, carefully covered and left to incubate for about 60 days.

Hawksbill turtles, recognized by their beautifully patterned shells and tapered beaks, tend to nest closer to vegetation and in more hidden locations. Green turtles, typically larger and more robust, favor open stretches of sand. Both species are iconic, protected, and deeply connected to the ecology of Dominica and the broader Caribbean region.

A Season of New Beginnings: Hatchings Have Begun

Now, as we enter the heart of the hatching season (June to September), the beach comes alive once more. Beneath the sand, the eggs that were laid earlier in the year have started to hatch. Guests of Rosalie Bay are often fortunate enough to witness this breathtaking moment—the emergence of hatchlings breaking through the sand, orienting themselves, and making their first journey to the ocean under the moonlight or early morning glow.

There is no experience quite like it. Watching a baby turtle take its first steps toward the vast sea, knowing only a few will survive to adulthood, instills a sense of awe and respect for nature that stays with you forever.

Conservation in Action

At Rosalie Bay, turtle conservation is more than just an attraction—it’s a commitment. In partnership with local wildlife organizations, our resort supports sea turtle protection and education efforts. Our eco-resort works with trained guides and conservationists to monitor nesting activity, relocate threatened nests, and assist hatchlings in their journey to the ocean when necessary.

Guests are invited to participate in these efforts, learning firsthand about the importance of turtle conservation and sustainable tourism. It's a unique opportunity to engage meaningfully with nature while enjoying the comfort and wellness experiences that Rosalie Bay offers.
