Turtle Season at Rosalie Bay

Hope for Hatchlings This October

Each summer, the black-sand beach at Rosalie Bay Eco Resort & Spa in Dominica becomes more than a tranquil escape for travelers — it transforms into a sanctuary for sea turtles. This year, despite challenges, the spirit of conservation remained strong, and we are now eagerly awaiting what we hope will be a season of successful hatchlings in early October.

A Challenging Year, A Hopeful Outlook

This summer, at least four turtles — a mix of hawksbills and green turtles — returned to Rosalie Bay beach to nest. With their careful labor and the dedication of volunteers, we are expecting over 200 hatchlings to make their way to the sea by early to mid-October.

It has not been an easy season. Sargassum seaweed, which has increasingly plagued Caribbean beaches, made it difficult to keep Rosalie Bay turtle-ready. Yet through persistence, teamwork, and community care, the beach has been kept as close to a sanctuary as possible.

A Community Effort

One of the most inspiring aspects of this season has been the collective effort to protect the turtles.

  • Local groups such as Next Level Hikers stepped up to help clear the beach and maintain safe nesting conditions.
  • Guests staying at Rosalie Bay Eco Resort & Spa, along with visitors from other properties around Dominica, joined in the mission.
  • Volunteers worked tirelessly alongside the Nature Enhancement Team, whose presence is vital in ensuring that turtles — and their hatchlings — have a safe journey from nest to sea.

These collective efforts prove that conservation is not just about science — it’s about community, culture, and shared responsibility.

Turtles and the Culture of Dominica’s Southeast

Sea turtles are deeply woven into the cultural and natural identity of Dominica’s southeast coast. Generations have watched them return to nest, year after year, and their survival is a reminder of resilience, continuity, and the importance of protecting the natural world.

But threats remain. Poachers are still prevalent on the island, and without active patrolling, turtle nests remain vulnerable. That is why the work of the Nature Enhancement Team is so crucial — not only to guard the turtles but also to educate communities and inspire visitors to join the cause.

 How You Can Help

At Rosalie Bay, we believe every small act can make a difference. Even a simple donation can go a long way — helping to support patrollers, maintain the beach, and ensure that poaching is mitigated.

When you stay with us or visit our beach, you are not just experiencing Dominica’s beauty; you are contributing to the ongoing mission of conservation and cultural preservation.

 Looking Ahead

As we await the first hatchlings of October, we do so with hope — and a prayer that nature is kind to us this year. With over 200 tiny turtles expected, the season ahead is not only a symbol of renewal but also a reminder of what we can achieve together when we care for our planet.

At Rosalie Bay Eco Resort & Spa, conservation is not just a program — it’s a way of life, a promise to future generations, and a commitment to the island we call home.

Join us this October to witness one of nature’s most magical moments: hatchlings making their way to the sea. And if you can, consider supporting the cause — because every effort brings us closer to a thriving future for Dominica’s turtles.
